Thermal spraying processes
In mechanical engineering, aerospace, steel construction, offshore industry, and the chemical and petrochemical industry, thermal spraying processes are becoming increasingly important thanks to their versatile applications. Surfaces can be effectively protected using thermal spraying processes, and their properties can be optimized by applying thermally sprayed coatings, which is especially important for protection against wear and corrosion. Thermal spraying processes are also widely used in manufacturing and maintenance, as they improve temperature stability and resistance to chemical stress.
Advantage of thermal spraying processes
The greatest advantage of thermal spraying processes is that when applying thermally sprayed coatings, a number of spray additives can be applied to components. Nearly all materials can be processed in this way because thermally sprayed coatings can be applied without needing to fuse or greatly affect the base material itself.
DIN EN ISO 14922 for quality assurance of thermal spraying processes
Company and personnel certification and corresponding training are crucial for meeting the high demands on thermally sprayed coatings. Comparable with DIN EN ISO 3834 for welding operations, there is also a corresponding quality assurance standard for thermal spraying processes – DIN EN ISO 14922, which differentiates between various quality assurance levels depending on the requirements for executing thermally sprayed coatings (Comprehensive = C, Standard = S and Elementary = E).
The internal quality management system or customer requirements determine which level is necessary for the respective application and whether the company carrying out the work must have DIN EN ISO 14922 qualification.
Which standards need to be complied with for applying thermally sprayed coatings?
There are a total of 17 quality requirements to be complied with when conducting thermal spraying processes. The most important of these are related to the qualification of personnel and the spraying process. The following European and international regulations must be followed:
What qualifications are required for personnel to carry out thermal spraying processes?
Qualified supervisory personnel must be designated to coordinate the planning and execution of thermally sprayed coatings. Their tasks and responsibilities are regulated by DIN EN ISO 12690. The coordinating personnel, or thermal spray supervisor, must have extensive, special or basic technical skills. Training as a European Thermal Spraying Specialist (ETSS) in accordance with DVS EWF 1188 is particularly recommended.
Qualification of the spraying personnel is essential for producing high-quality thermally sprayed coatings. This can be achieved through training as a European Thermal Sprayer (ETS) in accordance with DVS EWF 1197. The course concludes with an examination according to DIN EN ISO 1491.
Qualification of the process instructions for thermal spraying processes
The process instructions for thermal spraying processes are also subject to standards, for example DIN EN 15648 for component related procedure qualification or DIN EN ISO 14923, which specifies the necessary qualities of the required testing methods. For non-destructive testing methods, personnel must be qualified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9712.
